Confession
I don't make my bed in the morning.
Or, in the afternoon or evening.
Okay, so I make it on the day family arrives to visit, and when George W. and Laura come over for dinner. Because if they happen to see my bedroom, I want them to think I make my bed every day, even though I don't.
Most days, it's a crumpled mess of sheets and blankets and pillows and random socks. There are usually crunchy spots on my side of the bed where Lincoln has "spit out" (Jack's term) after a middle-of-the-night feeding, and cookie crumb fallout from Jack's early morning snack of vanilla wafers.
I read once that it takes seventeen times of making your bed every day for it to become a habit. I've tried that approach, counting in my head each day that I make it, but I've never made it past two. I stink at math, but I'm thinking that's a loooong way from seventeen.
So, there you have it. A confession of sorts.
"My name is Sarah. I don't make my bed."
Do you?

Sarah, in our house we have what we call "Don't Make the Bed Monday." It can fall on any day of the week and turn into "Don't Make the Bed Tuesday". Or Wednesday. Sometimes we have seventeen consecutive days of Don't Make The Bed Day. So you are absolutely in great company.
ReplyDeleteI'm Jennifer, and I don't make my bed. Except the day cleaning ladies come. Because of course I want them to think I make the bed! =)
Oh, the disappointment. I thought you were perfect!
ReplyDeleteI do make my bed. It bothers me to see it looking a mess. Of course I have other things that are messy, to make up for that. :)
Nope. Not a bed maker. There, I said it. Now I feel better. I'm glad to be able to relate with you completely on this one!
ReplyDeleteI have to. Honestly. Even if it's right before I get back into it. Although I USUALLY do it in the morning. I'm a Princess and the Pea sort. I can't sleep on wrinkled sheets. That's why my bed has to be made!
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid that you and I have similar styles in life! : ) I must admit that the beds get made only for the first day after the sheets are changed...then it's willy nilly come what may...unless of course company is coming! : ) I can so relate to the crumbs (I try to keep them away from Sam's side...he hates crummies!!!)or "spit out" and some times there's the occasional "blankie" or "Pooh bear" stuck in there from someone joining us in the wee hours of the morning. I do have to admit that I do enjoy the feeling of climbing into crisp clean sheets the first night after changing the sheets...heavenly, but not enough motivation to make the bed every day! : )
ReplyDeleteCarrie
it depends on the day and if i feel like making it or not. we have had the rule in our house for many years that the last one out of the bed makes it - and usually it was lance so our bed was always made because it drives him crazy to not have it made. generally if i am thinking, hoping, praying for a nap, i leave it unmade because i will just mess it up again for the nap and after nap i don't ever remake the bed unless company is coming.
ReplyDeleteyou are too funny!
I to confess,I do not make my bed everyday.
ReplyDeleteThe only times my bed is made is clean sheets day, cleaning bedroom day and company is coming in 5 minutes.
My hubby loves the bed made so he kinda makes the bed before getting in bed(weird) but hey whatever floats your boat.
One son does not make his bed ever and the other makes it every morning.
So now everyone knows,I dont make my bed :) Sorry Gramma :(
Oh, this is a toughie. Somedays I do. Just depends on what else is bothering me that day. For example, our basement is all torn up. That project is too HUGE to comprehend and I have all but walked away from the mess. So, in order to feel good about myself again, I make the bed.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am not overwhelmed by life, I don't.
I feel like if my bed is made then I am not a complete failure!! :)
I do happen to make my bed (although for years I didn't...I think I just made it to that 17th day one day and it became the habit). Although I really don't see the point of making my bed, because as soon as I make it, the dog finds his way down the sheets and the kids jump on it. So after all is said and done my work goes undone anyway. Se la vie!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm in the it depends camp too. No rhyme or reason. Just sometimes I do, and sometimes, not so much. Today was a yes day (we've been living in squalor, and it was time for a change), but most days I don't bother.
ReplyDeleteI make an effort to make my bed most days, only because the rest of the house is taken over by the kids. The toys all over the place drive me batty, so I like to walk into my room and not see a messy bed. But I am not a clean freak by any means, I wish I was.
ReplyDeleteNope - never. Well, if people are coming (and I know they'll be looking in our room) over or I just put on fresh sheets. Otherwise, not on your life.
ReplyDeleteSo, those who know me will not be surprised, but I make my bed every day. And I make the girls' beds...every day. It's just one of those things that even if the rest of the house is a mess, I can walk by the rooms and feel some sense of accomplishment. BUT a made bed does not an ordered life make, as has been VERY obvious to me this week. :)
ReplyDeleteI mostly make my bed every day.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm getting in a fresh bed.
But, like Mari said -- I have other areas of my life that are "unmade."
My mother is so disappointed that she couldn't instill in me the importance (in her mind) of making the bed everday.
ReplyDeleteI do not do it. Sometimes even if we are having company I don't do it. I wonder if it is actually a little form of teenage rebellion still, even though I'm an adult now.
I know, not a very rebellious rebel am I?? :)
Wow, I didn't know so many people didn't make their beds...like me. I feel much better now. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIn my anal retentiveness I always make my bed. I can't stand the feeling of walking in to my room and seeing the disarray of sheets. It's so bad, that I even straighten up Elizabeth's bed when she wakes in the morning or from naps......she's 5 months old.......I need help! Marrying a military dude doesn't help either, although he doesn't care either way, he enjoys a nicely made bed when he gets in it when he's home. You are too funny :) Miss you. San
ReplyDeleteThis one made me laugh :) Of course, I already knew this about you but it just makes you that much more endearing to me! I know you'll be shocked out of your socks to know that I don't transfer my ocd to bed-making...my ultra-non-morning-person syndrome far outweighs any slight ocd tendencies that I have :) lol...love and miss you much!
ReplyDeleteI am a recovering 'bed-maker-a-holic'. ;)
ReplyDeleteSome days it gets made, most days it doesn't - a few times it'll get made , but only on my side. :)
I make the bed absolutely every day. The neatness and orderliness of a bed that's made is refreshing after the chaos of the day. Not to mention it just looks good. I make the bed every morning as part of my "getting ready" routine. It's quite simple and takes very little time to just pull up the sheets and the comfortor and toss my pillow in place.
ReplyDeleteheck no i dont make my bed either. that's going to be interesting when justin and i live together---i think he's a bed maker. I guess that will be his job. =D I leave way too early in the morning to mess with that--I will compromise everything for an extra few minutes of sleep!!
ReplyDeleteGasp! I'm not sure we can be friends anymore.
ReplyDeleteMy mom had a real hangup with this like changing your undies daily. I have the same hangup and make my girls bed for them and they are 23 and 19. Kinda OCD maybe.
Do you still love me?
Man, you are one pathetic mom. HAHA. You know I'm kidding! (Please other bloggers don't think I'm a jerk, it was totally a joke and Sarah knows that!) I do however, make my bed everyday. I can't stand it when it's not made, I have no clue why, just one of those things.....now if I only felt that way about putting laundry away.......
ReplyDeletelove you!
I do make it everyday...even if it is late afternoon or evening. I love to get into a crisp made bed at night.
ReplyDeleteBut also, we purchased new bedding in March and I love the way it looks. Before we bought it, I did not like what we had so making the bed was a chore. But now that I love the way it looks in our room, I have to make it just so I can stare at it. Some days, it's the only thing in our house that is put together.
And I am okay with that.
HECK NO! Ok, every once in a long, long while I'll feel domestic and make the bed at SOME point during the day. But mostly the bed gets made at night, right before we get in it, because the sheets are completely untucked, the pillowcases are falling off the pillows, and there is absolutely no comforter left on my side because Adam sleeps like a tornado, and we have to make the bed so that we can actually sleep in it with any level of comfort. The end.
ReplyDeleteNo I don't. The Hubs used to, until I broke him of that silly habit. Hehe. Yeah for the messy bed!
ReplyDeleteIf tossing the comforter back on the bed to cover crumpled sheets counts as making the bed, yes, I make the bed. Every day.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you girlie! Most days it is not made, only if we have company coming or if I feel like looking productive. It's great to know I am not alone on this.
ReplyDeleteYou are so awesome Sarah! Your creativity in your posts just blows my mind..I love it! Well, unlike you I make my bed everyday for several reasons. The first, I HATE getting into an unmade bed. Secondly, I grew up having to make my bed right when we woke up. Third, our house is up for sale...try doing that & maybe it would cure you...Lol!
ReplyDeleteYes! I have to make my bed every morning. I agree with Jenni. I make my bed first thing in the morning and then go from bedroom to bedroom to make sure they are straight. I straighten Sierra and Kate's cribs and make Jules's bed if she forgot. It's my one part of the house that stays as neat as possible and gives me a sense of accomplishment. I like getting into a neatly made bed, and loooove getting into freshly clean sheets!
ReplyDelete30 comments? Goodness, did you offer a giveaway that I missed? ;)
ReplyDeleteYes, I make my bed in the morning - but it is mostly because my better half appreciates it - I could really care less! Heeeee!!
You know I do - that Carole wouldn't let me skip a day! (Although Phil's messy so it's harder these days!)
ReplyDeleteLauren
I do make my bed, but I wish I could be like you and just let it go. Occasionally I will let it go if it is late in the day, but doing so is huge progress for me. Enjoy your freedom, don't change!
