Gallons Galore

There are two things we consume so much of in this family that I am writing an entire blog post in their wallet-draining honor.

Milk: HOLY COW! (literally) We go through an insane amount of this stuff. Yes, we have two toddlerish boys that drink milk with every meal, but man-o-man, we can go through a gallon in a day if I drink it along with them. CRA-ZY.

Gas: Cringe. Tears. It costs over $70 to fill up our minivan. I remember in college putting one dollar's worth of gas into my Corolla to make it to church and back and then out to the movies later that night and to a friend's house after that. One dollar. That would get me out of the gas station parking lot today. Maybe.

I was discussing gas/milk prices with my sister the other day, and it turns out that milk costs just as much in her town as gas does. Right around $4.

Gas has milk beaten by a long shot near my abode. Gas is about $4.10/gallon and milk at our corner pharmacy/grab-a-candy-bar/last-minute-birthday-card store is $2.89/gallon. It goes on sale at our grocery store 2/$5 about once a month.

So, let's talk gallons.

What costs more in your town?

  1. Hey Sarah! I refuse to pay over $4 a gallon for gas, but we shall see! I paid $3.95 yesterday...the cheapest around my house.

Milk, I have found it for $2.98 at Walmart, but just this specific Walmart, other Walmarts are more expensive. Thank goodness it is close!

  2. I live where you do.
It is so depressing isn't it- I remember also when I was in high school paying for gas in change- wow I must be getting old!

  3. It's the same cost for me as it is for you, since I live so close to you. Aren't you glad we don't have to buy as much milk as we do gas?

  4. Gas is way more expensive here than milk. I generally get my milk at Cost.co - so two gallons are about $4. Honestly, I don't pay attention to the price as buying milk is just well a necessity in our household. I don't cringe as much about the cost of milk as I do the cost of gas! Especially since the dairy farmers our our livelihood!

  5. Um ... I don't know.

The truth is, I avert my eyes at the pump and at the grocery store checkout counter these days. I just know paying is painful -- at both places.

I'm lactose intolerant; so, I've never tried it, but just a suggestion for you all.

  8. gas has been hovering just below the $4.00 mark here for a couple of weeks now. think i paid $3.89 a week ago.

we get our milk delivered so it costs a little more than at the store (but, oh is it good milk). luckily, we don't drink that much. think i'm paying a little over $4.00 for a gallon

i guess i should look into changing that now that i'll be the only one drinking milk in the house.

  9. I paid $4.18 for gas last week! Are you kidding??? It could go higher by end of the summer. As bad as it sounds I don't drink Milk and Elizabeth is still on formula so no milk comparison for me. BTW, I remember that Corolla.....smile :)

  10. I remember when I was in college and lived in NC. Gas would be $.99/gal in Charlotte, but we'd drive about 10 miles south, just over the border to SC where it was $.89/gal. I just can't even imagine gas ever being that cheap again and I'm not even that old. *Sigh.* I still think it's all relative, though. In Europe, they're paying around $8-9/gal. Talk about ouch!

  11. I hear ya on this one. The other day my kids asked if we could invite a cow over to our house so they could thank him for the milk. YUP, we're milk lovers too. Right now the WaWa by our house which typically has the cheapest gas is 4.03 a gallon. Milk is around 3.49. We too go through a lot... about 3 gallons (of milk) a week! Perhaps we should invite the cow to stay and get our milk that way. Don't think my neighbors would appreciate that!

  12. Milk definitely costs more...but gas is slowly creeping up...My hubby and I can go through a gallon in a day! Of course that's our record, but when I'm in the grocery store I don't even think about whether we need milk or not I just buy another gallon and we go through it. Now my daughter loves milk, she drink whole though. She's working on going through a half gallon by herself before the expiration date :) Boy is gas the hot topic lately, it seems everyone is feeling it...Maybe this will finally change how we live. I had a carolla in college too...it cost $13 to fill the tank. Were those the good'ol days or what?

  13. Oh, we are expensive here. Gas is $4.16 at the Shell and $4.07 at Safeway. Milk is up to $4.00 here. I can get it for $3.05 at BJ's, but that is 15 minutes away, so I probably spend what I save on milk in gas to get there, so I just go to safeway for the 2 for $7.00 special. Oh well. I think we'll stay home and drink water.

  14. Gas is floating around 4.15 here. For the most part we don't have to pay more than 2.90/gallon for milk. I'm in that fun stage of buying milk for Owen (whole milk) and the regular stuff for the rest of us.

  15. I live in eastern Canada and we're paying $5.17/gallon for gas and milk is $7.06.

What can you do? Thank God everytime we drive somewhere or use milk in a recipe!

  16. It's crazy, isn't it! I can remember in college putting $5 in my (tiny) car and it would last me over a week. :( And milk definitely isn't much cheaper.

  17. Gas, so far. But I feel so old just talking about it. ECK!

  18. Gas is still more expensive here (Lancaster, PA) yesterday I saw it for $3.89 for the cheap stuff. It actually dropped .10 since last week. I have to buy milk too, so I don't really pay attention to the exact price, but I know it is less than $3/gallon. I could get it straight from the cow literally, my parents are dairy farmers, but I hate the taste of raw milk and so I will pay for my store bought milk.

  19. I think I should move! I am in Oregon and I just paid $4.27 a gallon for gas.... OUCH!! I drive a suburban! It cost me over $100 to fill my tank!

  20. The milk consumpting has gone way down over here. The girls prefer soy milk and that's not cheap either.

As for the gas, I was furious when it hit $4 and now I'm so happy when it's down to $4.07. When my car is half empty I fill up so it doen't seem like I'm spending so much. With Dave being home for 5 weeks we haven't gone too far too often. It's helped keep us away from the pump.

  21. From out here in California, we are ever so fortunate to have gas at $4.55+ per gallon today. I'm scared we'll reach $5.00 by August 1st. Milk is definitely cheaper here right now, but only by about a dollar.

  22. As you know I live near you so it is the same but I can totally relate to going through milk like water! If given free reign on it my kids would drink me out of house and home. My son alone can down a gallon in 24 hours without thinking twice about it. And you have 3 boys, you think it is bad now...
    Smiles!

  23. Milk costs me more-----only because we drink organic and because we have 6 kids. :)

  24. Gas....... Milk????????
You folks should take a a step back and chill and do your homework. Cause where I'm from not only our gas is extremely high try like $4.96-$5.02 a gallon but our gallon milk blows away gas. Our gallon of milk goes for $7.27-$9.00. Half gallon of ice cream goes for $11.99. That's the price you pay to live in Paradise......Hawaii
