The Sounds of Love
Happy Valentines Day, to my husband.
Thank you for the gift of sleep. It is more precious to me than you know.
Forever your girl,
SG
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Clink.
It's the first sound I hear. You reach over for your glasses and they make the slightest clinking sound on the latest book you're reading.
Your gentle kiss makes a soft and precious sound on my cheek.
As your feet touch the floor, the bed creaks ever so slightly as it relinquishes its duty of providing you those last few minutes of precious rest.
I hear the soft swishing of your workout pants as you make your way out of our room and quietly, gently close the door.
The pitter patter of four little feet running down the hallway are followed by your soft voice.
"Shhhhh - let's whisper. Momma is sleeping."
The pantry door closing. The ding of cereal hitting two tiny bowls. The refrigerator door releasing its suction and the plastic milk jug sliding from the shelf. My ears detect the inflection in your muffled words as you make an ordinary morning routine special for them.
I hear their laughter.
I hear yours.
The dishwasher door opening. The top rack sliding out. The glasses clinking as you place each one in the cabinet. The familiar ding of silverware stacking on top of one another in the drawer. The water begins pouring out of the faucet, as you lovingly tackle last night's dirty dishes.
My unfinished work.
Breakfast time is over. Our home soon resonates with excited little footsteps making their way to the playroom. As you close the door behind you, the squeals of laughter gradually dampen and I can no longer hear them. But, I know they will continue.
After all, Daddy is there.
As I begin to drift back off to sleep, having never opened my eyes, I replay each of these sounds.
They are the sounds of love.
Your love for me.
Each one of them communicates more love to my heart than ten dozen roses or diamonds or the most expensive chocolates ever could. It takes my breath away that you make this sacrifice for me everyday that you are home.
As I lay in our room - sleeping - I feel loved.
Truly, truly loved.
By you.
"Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions." 1 John 3:18
