Landline

A couple of months ago, we disconnected our landline.

When my hubby first suggested it, I did a little bit o' freakin' out: What? No landline? But, there's been a phone cord in a wall my whole life. That's just way too out there for us. We're conservatives. We're REPUBLICAN, for Pete's sake.

But, we realized we were throwing money down ye olde drain every month because we never used it. We determined that the only calls we got on it were from solicitors or the doctor's office. Everyone we know personally called us on our cell phones.

So, we disconnected our landline. *Gasp* And, being the disorganized disaster that I am, I forgot to email our friends and family and let them know. I alerted the doctor's office and Jack's school. And, that was it.

And, you know what? No one has asked us about it. No one cared about our poor little landline. We cast it aside like an old holey sock, and no one missed it.

But, we don't miss it either. I do have to make sure I keep my cell phone charged and handy, but since we disconnected the landline, I'm much more aware of where it is at all times and no longer let Lincoln use it for teething or the older boys dissect it with Jason's tools.

SO, I'm a wonderin'.

Have you disconnected your landline? If so, why did you do it and do you miss it? If you still have a landline, have you considered getting rid of it or is there no way on God's green earth? What are your main reasons for keeping it?

These are the things that go through my mind at 2am. I have issues. I know.

  1. still have a landline. My hubby refuses to carry a cell phone, hence he doesn't have one. *gasp* It drives me crazy that he won't get one.

  2. We ditched our landline three or four years ago when we got cable internet. Or maybe it was five years ago. We don't miss it at all. The only time we notice it is once in a blue moon when we have to fax something, but you can fax at Meijer or a million other places.

  3. We still have our landline. We have cell phones, but use them when we are away from home. One reason I hate to get rid of the landline is that I hate not being able to find peoples phone numbers in the book. I must be old!

  4. we thought about it, but the kids are getting to the age that they like talking on the phone with the cousins, gparents, and friends and I can't imagine them walking around my house with my cell phone. We may consider it when they are old enough to have their own cell phones....but, for now it wouldnt work for us.

  5. we still have our landline - we debated getting rid of it but i just didn't feel comfortable not having a landline in the house for the times when we have a sitter or now that morgan is getting old enough to be home for short periods of time alone i wanted to have a phone if she needed me or there was an emergency. the other main reason is i really really really dislike talking on cell phones. i am horrible about taking it with me and even answering it. so there is my long answer as to why we have a landline and i don't see us parting with it anytime soon.

  6. e got rid of ours about a year ago. We don;t miss it at all, since we both carry our cell phones on us and I figure we're saving at least $40 a month, more since we kept forgetting to pay it and kept getting late fees on top of the regular fees.

  7. I still have my landline. Why? Because I've had my cell phone hacked in to before, and some one made a whole lot of unauthorized calls overseas.

  8. Oh, I've been contemplating this for several months now. And I'm getting closer to just doing it! We have to get another source for our internet when we do, but I'm already thinking about the money we'll save!

  9. I live in the middle of no where & cell phone service is sketchy, I've switched to a better service, but.. in an emergency I'd like to keep my land line.. until.. well they can guarantee me no dropped calls :)

  10. I would get rid of my landline if I could get the same phone number on several cell phones. We tried not having a landline for a while, and the cell phone run was horrendous. I would be upstairs and the phone would ring all the way downstairs and I was running to get it. It was quite annoying.

  11. We still have a landline. There have been times during storms and such where I couldn't make a call using our cell phones but the landline had no problems. Plus I'm pretty sure that the day we had it disconnected Honey and I would both lose or somehow destroy our cell phones.

  12. We got rid of our landline 3 years ago before Izzy was born. We haven't looked back! We couldn't justify the expense- we mainly had it for internet anyway- but once we needed to upgrade to faster speeds, the landline just didn't make sense. If we ever had/needed a babysitter that didn't have a cell- we talked about purchasing like a $15 prepaid phone from target for emergencies.

  13. We still have it - but have been seriously considering getting rid of it. We need to save money monthly and we both have cell phones. But - hubby is horrible at remembering to charge his phone and keep it with him. He does have a work phone, but isn't supposed to talk on it much.

My biggest concern is mainly when we have a babysitter at home and hubby and I aren't together to be able to leave one phone home, and not having a central number for school, etc. to reach us at. I guess it's something I'll have to get past though if it'll really save a lot of money.

  14. We had been without a landline for 2 years.. then we moved. The area we moved to does NOT have cable internet. *gasp* We had to put the landline back in so we could get DSL. I can't wait to get rid of the landline again in the future. The only calls we've gotten are people who can't pronounce my last name and are selling something. The phone is coming down.. I hate the inturrruptions. It won't be missed when it goes away again.

  15. Yes! and no we did for a while but our new house has an alarm system that requires the phone for monitoring, However our "landline" is through the internet not the phone company.

  16. I have not had one for 4 years. I made the change trying to save money.
    So far, so good!

  17. We got rid of ours 2 years ago and its been fine. I've honestly never had a babysitter that didn't have their own cell phone, so that's never been an issue. I was hesitant at first because I don't love talking on cell phones, but I'm totally used to it now!

  18. I still have my landline for the simple reason that I'm too cheap to pay for cable internet and cell phone service. I have DSL, which packaged with my landline, costs less than cable internet and a cell phone together would cost. It's all about the money for me!

  19. We disconnected our landline, but I FORGOT to notify the school. Not quite as organized as you.
I'm with you though- we don't miss it at all!

Thanks for entering my give-away, too!

  20. Adam and I have never had a landline our entire marriage. It was weird after living in my parent's house becuase we, also being republicans, always had a landline. But we just never took the plunge after getting married and we haven't missed it at all. I'm thinking maybe later in life we'll get on when the kids start chatting on the phone more. But I currently appreciate not having one. We don't have a ton of cell minutes between the two of, which makes me very aware of how much time I'm spending on the phone. And I like that, because I'm not a phone person anyway.

  21. We keep our landline. I think my dad would faint if I told him we got rid of it. I guess the whole weather thing plays a part, even though my cell has never been unreliable in bad weather.

  22. with little ones, a landline, or at least a hardline over the cable or internet, is important over a cell because that is the only way 911 gets your address. they cannot from a cell unless you speak it to them. that's the ONLY reason we have one.

  23. So what do you think you will do when your boys are old enough to start getting phone calls from friends? I don't want my kids friends calling my cell phone all the time so I doubt we would even consider dripping our land line until they are all out of the house.
    Smiles!

  24. Really interesting comments, everyone!

Deb - We have yet to have a babysitter who didn't have a cell phone. Even our 14 year-old next door has one. But, I understand your concern there if a babysitter didn't have one.

Amy - both my and my husband's phone's have GPS. The police can locate us via where we are at any time due to the GPS system. I'm guessing GPS will be standard on all phones soon.

Jennifer - I could be wrong about this, but by the time my kids are old enough to talk on the phone, I think landlines will be a thing of the past. No more cords or underground wires. I have no idea what might take its place, but I have serious doubts we'll have landlines in 10 years. Glad I don't have to worry about that one for a while! :)

    Great discussion, everyone.

  25. I still think it's so funny that no one knew -- including us! We still have one, but we use it quite often since not all our family is on the same cell carrier.

  26. Since we've been married we've never had a landline...I forget what it's even like. When I go to my mom and dad's it seems strange that a phone just rings in the house :)It does get frustrating when I can't find my cell phone though, but it's not worth the money each month. Although, I will say that verizon's new 'hub' phone looks interesting.
